Ubuntu Linux (6 hrs.)

Open Source operating systems have come a long way in the past couple of years and are now very user friendly, feature rich and have few security and virus problems.  It is even easy to get files from a Windows computer or print to a printer on your Windows PC.  Open-source software is one of the “ten flatteners” as described by Thomas Friedman in his book The World is Flat.  “Ubuntu” is an ancient African word that means “humanity to others.”  If you put these two concepts together, you have Ubuntu Linux!  According to DistroWatch.com, Ubuntu Linux is the most downloaded distribution of Linux.  In this hands-on course for Linux newbies, the use of the Gnome and KDE desktops and the terminal CLI will be discussed, demonstrated and used.  Installation and the use of various free and open-source applications (the Gimp, Skype, OpenOffice.org, etc.) will also be covered.  Use of the Ubuntu Forums for support will be explored.
