Phlebotomy Certification (300 Hours)                    NEW!!

Students will be trained to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and precautions including: Vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture specimen collection on adults, children, and infants. Emphasis will be placed on infection prevention, proper patient identification, proper labeling of specimens and quality assurance. Students will be taught specimen handling, processing, and accessioning. Success in the healthcare field requires a working knowledge of the language and medical terminology.

Basic information about the structures and functions of each body system is presented to aid in mastering the meaning and spelling of thousands of medical terms and abbreviations. Both classroom instruction and clinical experience during a 100-hour rotation at a healthcare facility will provide an opportunity for the student to gain the skill and knowledge necessary to take the Certified Phlebotomist national examination administered by IAPS (exam fee included) or ASCP with required credentialing.

Note: Clinical hours may be scheduled during the day.

Students will be required to purchase their own uniforms. Students will be required to have a routine physical, a criminal background check, updated immunization records, 2-Step Mantoux TB test, and have started the hepatitis B series prior to participation in the externship portion of the program (to be discussed during orientation).
