THE MOTORCYCLE SAFETY
FOUNDATION’S SCOOTER SCHOOL 1

LEARN TO RIDE A MOTORSCOOTER!

This 4-hour (10 exercises) course is an entry-level, learn to ride scooter training and education course. It is designed to help individuals develop their skills and learn important street-riding strategies on a controlled riding course. The objectives of the course are as follows:

  1. Acquire basic operating skills.
  2. Increase safety awareness.
  3. Identify personal abilities and scooter capabilities.
  4. Develop strategies to help identify and manage risks.
  5. Give you the information and skills to pass the endorsement test at the BMV.

The only prerequisite for this course is that you have experience riding a bicycle, ANDTHAT YOU HAVE A VALID MOTORCYCLE TEMPORARY PERMIT (MUST HAVE PASSED THE WRITTEN EXAM AT THE BMV). You do not need to own a scooter, as loaner scooters are provided (50cc). If you do own a scooter, and it is 200cc or less, you may use it in class as long as it is in good operating condition (as determined by the instructor). Helmets are provided as needed. You must wear protective gear during the riding portions of the course (helmet, eye protection, long sleeves, long pants, full-fingered gloves, and sturdy over-the-ankle footwear).

Persons who participate in this program will develop fundamental skills and acquire the strategy of Search, Evaluate, and Execute (S.E.E.). All riders will also receive a You and Your Scooter Riding Tips booklet. The booklet contains information about scooters, their operation, and being safe on the street. It also provides exercises a scooter rider may wish to use for skills practice in a parking lot. A completion card is also given. You will also be given information and practice to take the ENDORSEMENT TEST at the BMV. To enroll, you must be old enough to legally operate a scooter on the street.
