Basic Rider Course

Questions? Call 1-800-83-RIDER.

The Basic Rider Course (BRC) is designed for beginning riders. The course consists of four hours of classroom instruction and 12 hours of riding exercises in a controlled environment to provide a complete introduction to motorcycling. Motorcycles and helmets are provided for your use during the course and if successful you will receive a completion card which you will take to the driver’s license bureau to receive your endorsement on your license. You do not have to take another riding test at the driver’s license bureau.

In this course, you’ll learn how to operate a motorcycle safely, with emphasis on the physical skills and mental skills / attitude necessary for dealing with traffic.
Your Instructors are certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and Motorcycle Ohio. They’ll start you off with straight-line riding, turning, shifting and stopping. You’ll gradually progress to cornering, swerving and emergency braking.

In the classroom you’ll learn about the different types of motorcycles, their controls, and how they operate. Want to get a head start on the classroom portion of the course?  Read through the Basic Rider Course Classroom Work Book.

The RiderCoaches, all experienced motorcyclists, will advise you on what to wear for comfort and protection. You’ll find out how alcohol and other drugs affect your ability to ride safely. A very important segment of the course will show you how to create your own strategy for riding in traffic, and dealing with critical situations.

The course includes a take home knowledge test and on the final day a riding skill evaluation. You’ll smile with satisfaction as the RiderCoach hands you the course completion card!
