A National Internet-in-Education Teacher Training Program

Background and Partners: This program has been funded by the US Department of Education and incorporates partners from across the country, including three community colleges: Cuyahoga, Miami Dade and Maricopa (Phoenix), the League for Innovation, the Center for Improved Engineering and Science Education, and Polaris Career Center.  The Project Website is located at: http://k12science.ati.stevens-tech.edu/alliance/

Purpose: Using a train-the-trainer model, this program is intended to reach 800 teachers in each metropolitan area over a three-year period.  The curriculum will focus on appropriate and compelling uses of the Internet, specifically as it relates to science education and the multi-disciplinary applications that can be generated using this technology.

Instructional Format: This 30-hour course is broken into 10 units, each of which is hands on and highly interactive.  The topics include communicating with experts and advanced uses of e-mail, participating and initiating collaborative projects, effectively gathering and using real time data, locating information on the Web, integrating Internet projects with Language Arts and Social Studies, creating classroom and individual Web pages, classroom management and Internet safety, and presenting your work to students, supervisors, and others.

Participant Profile: Many of the examples and projects in the class are rooted in science curriculum between grades 5 and 10.  Participants should be familiar with this level of material. Each participant must be teamed with at least one additional teacher from the same district or building (teams can be as large as 4).  Teams must apply together.  Each team member is committed to train at least 6 additional teachers in his or her own district in each of the next two academic years.  Participants should also have familiarity with mouse operations, opening and closing windows, and opening, printing and saving files.  Operating system (Macintosh or Windows) is unimportant.

Technical requirements: Each participant must have his or her own classroom access to at least one computer with Internet connectivity and a web browser.  The Alliance Project Website provides a detailed discussion of suggested prerequisites.

Followup and Support: The instructors of these seminars will support the participants in their future training endeavors both with materials and expertise, including phone, listserv, and e-mail support, and the potential of site visits.  Support will include technical, teaching, and organizational components.

Instructional dates and locations: Workshops are designed to accommodate up to 20 participants. Two series of workshops are scheduled for the Winter and Spring Terms, 1999-2000.. The deadline for Winter Term applications is pending.  Two semester hours of graduate credit will be available. Details will be forthcoming for a summer term, June 2000.
