ESRI's Community Atlas Community Atlas Competition (GIS)

ESRI hosts the US Community Atlas Project, asking schools to prepare a set of maps and description about their community or a conservation issue within it. Schools needed to produce 10-20 maps and 1000-2500 words and post it on the Community Atlas web site. Many groups began the project, and classes from about 20 schools completed the challenge for 2000-2001 school year. Each school with a complete entry earned school building site licenses of ArcView GIS software or extensions.
A "Model Project" was awarded on the basis that the project demonstrate strong cartography and compelling text, which combined to tell a powerful story.  "Smart Growth" is an issue that every state in the US is dealing with. This year's Model Project winner took on the daunting topic and composed maps and text showing some of the dramatic issues of urban sprawl.  Congratulations to Stillwater Area High School, in Stillwater, MN, for earning the Model Project Award in the 2000-01 US Community Atlas Project!  You can see this project and others at the Community Atlas web site:
