Across Ohio and the nation, competitive sports are facing a growing challenge: a critical shortage of qualified officials. From youth leagues to high school and collegiate athletics, the need for trained referees, umpires, judges and other officials continues to grow.
To help address this growing issue, we’re tackling the shortage head-on with “Get in the Game: Basketball Officiating Masterclass,” a hybrid Adult Education program designed to recruit, train and prepare the next generation of basketball officials in time for this upcoming season.
The class builds on the success of “Get in the Game: Football Officiating Masterclass” and “Get in the Game: Baseball Umpiring Masterclass,” both offered during the past year as part of our expanding effort to prepare qualified sports officials.
Led by seasoned instructors with decades of officiating experience, the Basketball Officiating Masterclass combines online learning, classroom instruction and hands-on court experience. During class, students will develop a strong understanding of basketball rules, proper officiating mechanics and the real-time decision-making skills needed to manage games with confidence, consistency and integrity.
The hybrid program features:
8 1/2 hours of online coursework
4 hours of in-person instruction at Polaris Career Center in Middleburg Heights
8 hours of hands-on court experience at a local gym (site to be determined)
Classroom Dates:
October 12, 19 and 26 and November 2, 9 and 12, 2026, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Cost: $75 (includes an official Fox 40 whistle, instruction, testing and certification)
Whether you're looking to stay connected to the game, support your local sports community, earn extra income or explore a new career path, the Basketball Officiating Masterclass provides the training, certification and confidence you need to get in the game.
